That’s just strange to me, if you want to volunteer and help the community, why should you have to make connections just to do it?

If you have to wait to be invited or be granted acceptenance that’s basically a club group, not a volunteer group. You might be Generation Z, depending on who you talk to, but that really doesn't matter much.

Maybe it’s easier when you get older and people are in a place in their lives where they are looking to settle down in a city. I wouldn't worry so much about finding the one right now when you're not even in your mid-20s!

I tend to only date locals but I'm also an Asian woman and see this place as my home too (have some family here, etc) so that might be different.

I wouldn't say I'm exactly looking for my life-long soul mate, but just the experience of dating in Hawaii is pretty difficult when most people know they are leaving, and definitely don't want to invest anything here.

I give this piece of advice often to people looking to settle in or connect here in Hawai'i: volunteer. I believe there's no "one perfect person" for each of us, so don't sit on the sidelines waiting for them to show up. And -- for what it's worth -- people are saying 3 or 5 years before a transplant is likely to make it/stay in Hawaii.

I especially don't like educating people I date about how to get along with the locals. You can try dating sites and have strong criteria mentioned in the first sentence of your introductory paragraph.

I’m in Honolulu, the dating pool which I suppose is bigger than most outer islands.

It does feel like every potential relationship here always come with an expiration date. Young mainlanders do usually leave when the honeymoon phase is over and they realize their careers and bank accounts will always fall behind their mainland friends'.

Most people I meet/date tend to have plans to move in the next 6 months - 1 year. You're young - enjoy dating for 6 months to a year and if that person is the one, you'll make it work (maybe they'll stay or maybe you'll want to go).

I'm a local girl and have realized how attractive it is to me when someone is as connected to this place as I am, and how much it turns me off to have to defend or explain my culture.
